SC Villa's hopes of advancing to the CECAFA Kagame Cup semi-finals were dashed after Red Arrows FC secured a 1-0 victory over Djibouti Telecom FC in their final group stage match on Tuesday.
The win propelled Red Arrows to six points, edging out SC Villa as the best runner-up.
The Jogoos entered their last group game needing a win to secure an automatic spot in the semifinals but were held to a draw, ultimately falling short of the required points.
The draws left them with five points and relying on Red Arrows to drop points against Djibouti Telecom FC. However, Anthony Shipanuka's first-half goal proved decisive, and Red Arrows held on for the win.
According to the tournament format, the top team from each group advances directly to the semifinals, while the second-best team across all groups claims the final knockout stage slot. SC Villa's failure to secure maximum points against APR FC on Monday proved costly, as they missed out on an automatic semifinal spot.
The semi-final lineup now features Sudan Premier League sides Hay Al Wadi and Al Hilal FC, APR FC from Rwanda, and Red Arrows from Zambia.
Looking ahead, the 17-time Uganda Premier League champions now shift their focus to the preliminary round of the Champions League. The Jogoos are set to face Ethiopian side Commercial Bank (CBE SA), aiming to make an impact on the continental stage following their CECAFA Kagame Cup campaign.
