The Lady Rugby Cranes wrapped up their Rugby Africa Women’s Cup campaign with a 47-0 defeat to Kenya, but it wasn’t all doom and gloom.
Despite suffering two heavy losses, a growing consensus within the Uganda Rugby Union and the wider rugby community is that the team is making progress. Uganda finished third overall, a result that many see as a step forward.
"The women’s performance was commendable, considering our absence from top-tier women’s rugby competition. To return after five years and not capitulate, but instead stay competitive, is impressive. This experience has also given us valuable lessons on what we need to do to perform at that level,” said URU vice president for technical affairs, Eric Butime.
Uganda’s highlight came in their narrow 24-20 victory over hosts Madagascar, a result that demonstrated their ability to compete in tight encounters, even if they fell short against eventual champions South Africa and regional rivals Kenya.
Butime believes that the 28 players who represented Uganda now have a clearer understanding of what it takes to compete against elite teams in the WXV. However, one of the most noticeable gaps was in fitness levels compared to the tournament’s top sides.
“We need to focus on player strength and conditioning. We had bridged the gap at the Sevens level, but at the 15s, especially in the front row, there was a noticeable difference. Additionally, our set pieces were below standard, and that’s an area we must improve,” he explained.
Looking ahead, the Uganda Rugby Union plans to increase investment in both the women’s league and youth development.
“We are where we are because of our league. It gave our women the chance to play 15s rugby and reach the top tier. Now, we need to maintain that and continue improving. Age-grade rugby is also critical. From last year’s U-19 team that competed in South Africa, we integrated five players into this squad,” Butime noted.
Remaining in the top flight is a significant achievement. With continued development, the Lady Rugby Cranes can look forward to even stronger performances in the year ahead.
