Vision Group duo won gold and bronze medals at the 14th edition of the Uganda Woodball Open, which concluded at Soroti University.
Victoria Nampala Bugembe and Joan Najjuma secured a gold medal for Vision Group in the corporate female doubles with 51 strokes, ahead of their opponents Patience Ainembibazi and Deborah Nabirye from the Ministry of Public Service, who also collected 51 strokes but won silver. Bronze went to Peninah Namugwera and Leony Nakanirya Namuyanja of Kisubi University.
The two-day tournament, attended by junior, youth, and corporate athletes, saw Joan Najjuma of Vision Group receive a bronze medal in the corporate female singles category. Silver and gold in this category went to Agness Amongin from UNEB and Noeline Nabirye Nalwoga from Kisubi University, respectively.
Joan Najjuma, who missed the 2023 Uganda Woodball Open hosted in Mbale City, applauded Vision Group for always supporting its staff in ensuring the company is represented in national games.
“It’s not easy to receive a medal in a competition where senior players come together, but it’s just from God that grants such an opportunity,” said Najjuma.
The annual event, supported by the Uganda Woodball Federation, saw Shekinah Glory Christian International School, Kyazanga Muslim Primary School, and Nalugala Primary School take home gold, silver, and bronze medals, respectively, in the boys’ junior category. Kyanzanga Modern Primary School, Shekinah Glory Christian International School, and Nalugala Muslim Primary School won in the girls’ category.
In the youth category, Airforce SS, Bbowa Community Polytechnic Institute, and The Amazima Schools won gold, silver, and bronze, respectively, in the boys’ category. Gulu College of Health Science, The Amazima School, and Nakateete SS were winners in the girls’ youth category, taking home gold, silver, and bronze medals.
In the men’s corporate category, Zoe Woodball Club won gold with 436 points, University of Kisubi took silver with 436 points, and the Ministry of Public Service won bronze with 449 points. In the ladies’ category, University of Kisubi won gold with 486 points, the Ministry of Public Service took silver with 490 points, and Zoe Woodball Club won bronze with 516 points.
Paul Mark Kayongo, president of the Uganda Woodball Federation, was overwhelmed by the convincing turnout of teams in the annual event, hosted in the Teso sub-region for the first time.
The competition closed with Rev. Fr. Gerom Agelu witnessing Prisons Woodball Club, Kampala International University, and Makerere University collect gold, silver, and bronze in the men’s open category. In the ladies’ category, Ndejje University, Kampala University, and Makerere University took home gold, silver, and bronze, respectively.
In his speech, Agelu encouraged the Uganda Woodball Federation to open a regional office to serve as a link to the head office.
