KAMPALA - Lil Pazo, real name Yasin Mukasa, is in trouble over the song Irena, which is being claimed by the family of the estate of Kato Lubwama for copyright infringement.

It is said that Lil Pazo performed the song without the owner's consent.

The legal representatives of the late Kato Paul Lubwama, Maldes Advocates, issued a letter on July 14, 2024, demanding immediate action against what they described as a clear case of intellectual property violation.

The late Kato Paul Lubwama was the composer and original creator of the song Kilabe Ebiiso.

This composition, copyrighted under Lubwama’s name, has reportedly been infringed upon by Lil Pazo’s new release titled, Irena.

The law firm representing Lubwama’s family asserts that the lyrics, rhythm, and beat of Lil Pazo’s song are a direct replica of Lubwama’s original work. The suit demands Lil Pazo to pay sh300m in damages plus sh20m in legal fees.

“I want to tell the lawyers of Kato Lubwama that they are dealing with a poor boy who has nothing on earth. The most I can manage to pay is sh200, 000,” said Lil Pazo in an interview.

Lil Pazo added that he has never seen a figure of sh300m in his entire life. The singer confirmed that he had received the notice.

He however claims that since he sang Irena and not Kilabe Ebiiso, he is not at fault. He adds that anyone is free to redo his songs, even after he dies.

With the music industry currently embroidered in a copyright law amendment debate, this case becomes one of high interest.

Kato Lubwama passed away on June 7, 2023.
