Bukuta Bukuta is not the best song to use when trying to figure out what the hype about Fik Gaza is all about.

Fik Gaza is a dancehall artiste, which is somewhat worrying: getting your genre defined from the get go is not a good look.

His government name is Shafiq Dangote, and I am not making that up. His music career started in 2018 and he seems to have led something of a colourful life in between stints in music. He got himself arrested in Saudi Arabia over a gig.

The Ugandan Musicians Association was apparently outraged over his arrest. The Saudi Arabian government mostly ignored their outrage.

The Saudi Arabian government, having no idea of who he is, ignored all ‘concerns’.

He was eventually released and went on to find something else to add to his resume – the arrest was about something work permit-related, presumably.

He has worked as a turn boy on trucks plying routes to Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda, and has featured at concerts including Davido’s Timeless concert.

He is associated with Empire, though by the time of going to press, we could not confirm whether he is formally signed up with the management firm.

So far, no one seems to have associated him with the other Fik, Fik Fameika. This is probably a good thing.

On Bukuta Bukuta, he seems to flirt with this similarity but after a bar or two, finds his own voice. Bukuta Bukuta is dancehall through and through, but unfortunately, doesn’t have much going on.

The backing track sounds like something you would find online if Wikipedia had audio samples to use when offering definitions of musical genres. It is bland, painfully so.

Fik Gaza tries to inject some life into it, but if we are being brutally honest (we usually are) the best you can say about his attempt is that it is enthusiastic.

Bukuta Bukuta is not the best song to use when trying to figure out what the hype about Fik Gaza is all about. It is a mostly underwhelming track – the most interesting thing about it is the title. I did not have the energy to find out what Bukuta means. Probably something allegedly cool.
