'Uganda Airlines London flights on track for May launch'

Uganda Airlines is gearing up for the much-awaited launch of its direct flights to London Gatwick, reinforcing its ambition to connect Uganda to global markets. 

Addressing recent speculation, the airline has clarified that its Foreign Carriers Permit remains intact, and preparations are progressing as planned.

In a statement issued on March 23, the airline dismissed the reports, clarifying that its authorisation to operate in the UK has not been revoked.

"Uganda Airlines would like to clarify that this information is untrue; our Foreign Carriers Permit remains valid and has not been revoked," the airline stated, reassuring passengers that the inaugural flight on May 18 will go ahead as scheduled.

The response follows a report by The Sun, which claimed that UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy had ordered an immediate suspension of the route due to Uganda’s human rights record.

The article further alleged that the British government was reconsidering sanctions against Ugandan officials and was uneasy about the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s approval of the flights.

Despite these reports, Uganda Airlines remains firm that the London route is a key milestone in its international expansion.

While launching the route last week, Uganda Airlines CEO Jenifer Bamuturaki highlighted the strategic importance of the direct link to Western Europe, stating that the airline had spent years laying the groundwork by expanding its African network.

"We are diligently preparing for the launch of our operations to London Gatwick. This route marks the next phase of our growth, connecting Uganda to vital business and tourism markets," Bamuturaki said.

The airline plans to operate four weekly flights to Gatwick, reinforcing its position as Entebbe’s leading carrier. The route is expected to enhance trade between Uganda and the UK, with the Airbus A330-800neo also increasing cargo capacity for growing exports.

British authorities have not issued any official statement regarding the reported suspension, and the UK Civil Aviation Authority has yet to confirm any review of the route.

However, the launch event was attended by British High Commissioner to Uganda, Lisa Chesney, who underscored the importance of the new flight in strengthening economic and cultural ties.

"We are grateful for the collaboration that has made this possible. This flight represents more than just a route—it’s a connection that will benefit businesses, tourists, and the Ugandan diaspora in the UK," she said.

Contrary to speculation, the London flights remain on track, with ticket sales and preparations progressing as planned.
