Uganda Airlines has officially announced the launch of its direct flight service between Entebbe International Airport and London Gatwick starting May 18.

Speaking during the launch event at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala on March 20, Jenifer Bamuturaki, the Airline’s Chief Executive Officer said the new route is strategically key in connecting Uganda with key European business and tourism markets

“Uganda's exports to the United Kingdom in the last year were worth $22.6m. We are confident that our cargo capacity our plans to expand and enhance our cargo operations with a cargo freighter later this year will support the rapid growth of Ugandan exports to the United Kingdom. The route also elevates Uganda Airlines international profile and strategically positions us to tap deeper into global aviation markets,” she said.

Uganda Airlines will operate the route using its Airbus A330-800 Neo aircraft, featuring economy, premium economy, and business class seating.

Initial plans indicate four flights a week to London Gatwick Airport. This new route will be Uganda Airlines' third destination outside Africa, after Dubai and Mumbai.

Minister of Works and Transport General Katumba Wamala said the new route is an airbridge that would reduce the time for travel and cost of travel between Uganda and its strategic business and tourism market.

Uganda has not had direct flight rights to the UK since British Airways suspended services almost 10 years ago.

Wamala said that the direct flights will streamline cargo transport, making it easier for Ugandan products such as coffee, bananas, tea and other perishables to reach the UK market.
