Rally drivers Mansur Lubega and Ponsiano Lwakataka are now well-positioned to compete for this year's National Rally Championship (NRC) title.

This development comes after lubricant supplier Caltex confirmed its return to motorsport by sponsoring the two drivers.

“We supported champion Moses Lumala some time back, but now we’re back with Lubega and Lwakataka,” said Joy Lyavaala, Caltex’s Marketing Manager, during a ceremony where Lubega presented the trophies he won in the 2WD category of the Shell V-Power Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally.

“We brought Lubega on board for continuity—he’s a young, determined driver. And for champion Lwakataka, we’re going to help reinstate your engine so you can participate in the fourth round of the NRC,” she added.

Lubega claimed victory in the 2WD category of the Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally in Mbarara, beating Ibrahim Lubega. Lwakataka, however, dropped out due to engine failure.

Currently sitting third on the NRC log with 117 points, Lwakataka has vowed to fight on, declaring he hasn’t given up on the title. Ronald Sebuguzi leads the standings with 142 points, followed by Musa with 132.5. Lwakataka and Duncan Mubiru are tied for fourth with 115 points. Didas Masiko follows in fifth with 112 points, while Yasin Nasser and Sodo Aine Godfrey occupy sixth and seventh positions with 110 and 102.5 points, respectively.

The next event—the fourth round of the NRC—is the Eastern Motorsport Rally, set to take place in Jinja.

Lubega thanked Caltex for their support and promised to make them proud by securing the 2WD title this season.
