The annual Easter Hockey Tournament kicks off this weekend at Lugogo Hockey Stadium, featuring thirteen men's teams battling for the championship title.

Defending champions Weatherhead enter the competition as favorites but face stiff competition from both local rivals and visiting Kenyan sides.

Weatherhead captain Maxwell Mugisa remains confident despite the tough challenge ahead. "It's a big test for us, but we're ready to live up to expectations and retain our title," Mugisa said ahead of their opening match against Wabalonzi on Good Friday. "We know the competition will be fierce from both Ugandan and Kenyan teams."

The tournament's men's division features strong local contenders like Wananchi SC and KHC Stallions, alongside Kenyan sides Tunza Sports U21, USIU A and B, Bungoma, and Eldoret Youth teams. Mugisa acknowledged the Kenyan teams' high-intensity style of play as a particular challenge. "Their quick reactions and precise decision-making will test us, but we're prepared for the battle," he noted.

In the women's category, defending champions KHC Swans face an uphill task with several key players absent due to national team commitments in Namibia. The team will rely on experienced players like Sandra Namusoke, Sarah Arinaitwe, Vanessa Abeja, and the Alum sisters to maintain their championship form.

The school girls' category adds another competitive layer to the tournament, with Gayaza High School, St. Mary's Namagunga, and Kyadondo Secondary School all vying for supremacy. These young teams bring fresh energy and emerging talent to the Easter hockey showcase.

With high-stakes matches across all categories and the added international flavor from Kenyan teams, this year's Easter Hockey Tournament promises three days of intense competition and entertainment for hockey fans. The action runs from Good Friday through Easter Sunday at Lugogo Hockey Stadium.
