The 2024 Under 20 World Athletics Championships kick off today in Lima, Peru, with five Ugandan athletes in action. The athletes will feature in both the 5000m and 3000m steeplechase.
Africa’s 3000m steeplechase champion Loice Chekwemoi and her compatriot Nancy Cherop will be the first Ugandans to compete today as they aim to qualify for the finals in their event.
Uganda also can win its first medal in the 5000m finals. In the men’s category, Kenneth Kiprop and Samuel Cherop Simba will represent the country, while Charity Cherop competes in the women’s category.
The team also features Jacob Kiplimo’s youngest brother, Musau Titas, who will compete in the 3000m event. Musau becomes the fourth member of the Simba brothers to represent Uganda on the international stage. Musau and Kiplimo aside, the other Simba brothers include Victor Kiplangat and Oscar Chelimo who have won medals globally.
Uganda is represented by ten athletes at the championships, with five men and five women competing. In the previous edition held in 2022 in Cali, Colombia, Uganda secured one medal, a bronze won by Prisca Chesang in the 5000m.
As the 2024 competition unfolds in Lima, the Ugandan athletes will be aiming to improve on their previous performance and bring home more medals for their country.
