Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) has fielded 10 athletes to represent Uganda at the 2024 Under-20 World Athletics Championships, scheduled for August 27 to 31 in Lima, Peru. The traveling squad consists of ten men and ten women.
One of the key athletes to watch is Africa’s 3000m steeplechase champion Loice Chekwemoi, who will compete in the 3000m steeplechase. Chekwemoi has consistently demonstrated her potential as a rising star in the event.
According to the UAF Publicity Secretary Abdallah Muhammed, the federation is optimistic about achieving better results than in 2022 with this team selection. “We have high hopes for all our athletes, but it’s important to note that Loice is one of our exceptional talents. She has consistently performed well at both school and national levels. We are eager to see her shine in Lima,” Muhammed stated.
The UAF believes that the better these young athletes perform, the brighter the future of athletics in Uganda.
“We are counting on these young men and women for the continuity of the sport. With more athletes nearing retirement, we are confident that these young talents will be strong replacements for our aging stars,” Muhammed explained.
In the 2022 edition, Uganda secured one medal, a bronze won by Prisca Chesang in the 5000m. The United States of America topped the medal table with seven gold, followed by Jamaica with six, while Ethiopia finished third also with six gold medals.
