Wananchi SC send title warning with convincing win over Weatherhead

Defending champions Wananchi SC made a strong statement in their National Hockey League title defence, overpowering title contenders Weatherhead 4-2 in a thrilling encounter on Sunday evening.

The match saw Wananchi capitalise on Weatherhead’s defensive vulnerabilities, particularly from short corners, to secure the crucial victory.

Emmanuel Baguma and Jackson Musinguzi starred with two goals each, while Ivan Aine and Walter Barunji managed consolation strikes for Weatherhead.

Despite the loss, Weatherhead forward Brian Okodi remained optimistic about his team’s title chances. “We’re still processing the defeat, but our championship ambitions are very much alive,” Okodi told Vision Sports post-match. He also expressed confidence in Weatherhead’s new defensive pairing of Swalik Isabirywe and Sam Mwesigwa, predicting they would soon become a formidable force.

The win propelled Wananchi SC to the summit of the league table with seven points from three games and an impressive +12 goal difference. They narrowly edge out KHC Stallions, who also have seven points but a slightly inferior +8 goal difference. Badgers and Weatherhead are tied on points in third and fourth, respectively, separated only by goal difference (+19 vs. +16).

In the women’s category, KHC Swans tightened their grip at the top with a dominant 5-1 triumph over Gazelles. HDF remain level on points with the Swans but trail significantly in goal difference (+25 vs. +10), underlining the Swans’ attacking prowess.

The result sets up an intriguing title race, with Wananchi SC emerging as early frontrunners while Weatherhead look to regroup and mount a response.
