Kampala Hockey Club (KHC) Swans' ability to retain the Hockey Uganda Cup title back-to-back speaks volumes about their behind-the-scenes efforts, which seem to be surpassing those of other clubs in the hockey fraternity.
Swans’ Sarah Arinaitwe was the hero of the night, scoring the only goal that secured their title retention on Sunday evening at the hockey stadium.
The Swans reached the finals after defeating HDF 4-0 and 2-0 in the double-legged semifinal tie, while Wananchi beat Gazelles 2-1 and drew 2-2 to advance to the final.
Wananchi SC looked poised entering the game, but they were unable to find the back of the net. In contrast, the Swans capitalized on their only clear-cut chance to score.
The victory awarded the Swans an early Christmas gift and their second consecutive Uganda Cup title.
According to Sandra Namusoke, one of the senior players on the team, “We shall work zealously to hold onto the gains we have achieved. This team is motivated by two things: honoring the contributions of each stakeholder and ensuring that the fantastic work done last season has a lasting impact on each individual and the hockey fraternity.”
In the men’s category, Wananchi beat Stallions 4-0 to win their second Uganda Cup title.
The Swans not only took the title but also received the Most Valuable Player (MVP) accolade, awarded to Winnie Nandi, while Wananchi’s Doreen Mbabazi was the tournament’s top scorer with 8 goals.
In the men’s category, Wananchi’s Emmanuel Baguma was awarded the tournament's MVP, while Jordan Mpiima was the top scorer with 11 goals.
