On Friday, June 21, 2024, the members of Blu 3 - Cindy Sanyu, Lillian Mbabazi and Jackie Chandiru - partnered with Reach A Hand Uganda (RAHU) for a community outreach in Kitalanga's Heritage Zone, Kansanga, a city suburb.
RAHU is anon-profit organisation that works with young people on sexual reproductive health and rights, HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.
This initiative targeted over 300 expecting mothers and young girls, delivering sexual and reproductive health information through door-to-door activations and public engagement. Topics covered included family planning, menstrual health management, and HIV awareness.
The outreach also provided Mama Kits to expectant mothers, re-usable sanitary pads to young women, and HIV services such as testing, condoms, and PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) medication.
“I often resort to drinking to escape my hardships. With four children to care for, I can barely afford to educate them or buy sanitary pads for myself and my 16-year-old daughter,” said Alice Avuru, a community member and outreach beneficiary.
This outreach event was an activity done ahead of the Blu 3 re-union concert at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel gardens on June 22, 2024.
Christine Mbajja, the LC1 chairperson for Kitalanga, Heritage Zone, praised the efforts of the three musicians in improving access to reproductive health services. She highlighted the high prevalence of teenage pregnancies, poor menstrual health management, and HIV in her community, noting that women often resort to sex work to meet their basic needs.
