The secondary school teams that will participate in this year’s edition of USSSA Ankole Zone Ball Games II national qualifiers, have thronged Ibanda Core PTC in Ibanda municipality for the games that commence today until Sunday, June 30.
The teams arrived at the venue on Wednesday, and by 3 pm, over 70 teams had reported.
On arrival, they would go through mandatory screening in all the disciplines before they would be ushered in for accommodation at the different boys’ and girls’ game villages.
The completion will see the best teams from the 13 districts of Ankole, battle for accolades in netball, volleyball, handball, woodball, dance sport, chess, and football U16.
“We are happy that our championship is growing in numbers as many schools have embraced different sports disciplines that were once unknown in the zone,” Said zonal chairman Egidio Mucunguzi.
Originally, netball and volleyball were the popular sports in Ankole in this championship but an increase in numbers has been observed in woodball, handball, and dancesport. However, rugby and chess remain small.
Girls and boys’ volleyball defending champions St Elizabeth and St Augustine respectively, handball girls and boys holders Maryhill High School and Ntare School, and netball queens Boni Consilii are among the teams to beat and favourites for the accolades.
The best teams will qualify to represent Ankole in this year’s edition of the USSSA Ball Games II national championship due at Teso College Aleot, Soroti from July 10 to 21.
