Following FUFA President Moses Magogo’s remarks accusing sports journalists of spreading falsehoods and deceptive narratives that harm the game—a statement that clearly stemmed from media criticism over the high ticket prices for Uganda Cranes matches—it’s important to reflect on the vital role sports journalists play in Ugandan football.

Before dissecting Magogo’s comments, let’s first acknowledge the fundamental contributions of sports journalists to the growth and development of football in Uganda.

Sports journalists shape public perception of athletes, teams, leagues, and the sport itself. They highlight inspiring stories, expose controversies, and influence opinions—ultimately impacting the reputation of sports entities. Through in-depth storytelling, interviews, and analysis, they strengthen the bond between fans and their favorite teams.

Their work has driven fan engagement, leading to higher stadium attendances (including at Namboole and other venues hosting Uganda Cranes matches), increased merchandise sales, and greater visibility for sponsors. They have also played an indirect yet crucial role in securing sponsorships for national teams through their coverage on radio, TV, and digital platforms.

Given this, it’s difficult to comprehend the FUFA president’s dismissive remarks. It’s disappointing that someone who understands the game so deeply would undermine the very journalists who have contributed to his success as FUFA president and helped protect the Uganda Cranes’ image over the years.

Sports unite people, and journalists serve as the bridge between fans and the game. It’s their duty to report on issues that matter—including those affecting supporters. While opinions may differ, their motivation comes from a place of passion: a desire to see Ugandan football grow and thrive, with more fans proudly supporting the national team.

With that in mind, the attitude toward sports journalists must change. They have a voice—and it deserves respect.
